Home is with you by Gamerwife

Hello! My name is Mariko and I blog video games and other nerdy things over at Gamerwife. I discovered The Cat, You and Us last year and instantly fell in love. My husband and I were planning our honeymoon in Tokyo and Damaris and Dani’s photos and adventures were a huge inspiration to us. Although our blogs themselves are very different, I found that I actually had a lot in common with Dani and Damaris and was beyond honoured when they invited me to guest post for their 1st Blogaversary.

Since Dani and Damaris are actually closet geeks, they called on me to bring some geekiness to their blog. And since the theme is Home is With You, I decided to whip up an inspiration board and share my tips on how to work some geekiness into your home decor.

Geek Home Decor by Gamerwife

1. Bookends from Knob Creek Metal Arts

2. Pixel Heart Sign from Rusty Walnut

3. Portal/Doctor Who Shower Curtain by Miss-Lys

4. R2D2 Plate from Cabinet of Pretty Things

5. Totoro Pillow by Youcoucou

Accessorize

Accessories are a great way to sneak in some geeky flair without having to commit to major renovations, like refitting your doors so they slide open like they do on Star Trek. (But seriously, how cool would that be?) A couple of themed throw pillows or an unusual bookend could be all you need to insert some personality into a room, without disrupting the general design aesthetic.

Good Design is Always Good

Well designed items will always be in fashion, geeky or not. While geeky decor used to be considered disposable, manufacturers are starting to wise up and offer items that are well constructed, stylish and geeky. As well, design on demand sites like Society 6 now offer all kinds of household items with the geeky design of your choice.

Fanmade and Handmade

Some of the nicest geeky decor items I’ve seen have been made or constructed by fans for fans. The best thing about this is that in addition to getting that is more unique, you also get a chance to interact with a support a fellow fan. While tons of geeky decor items can be found on sites like Etsy and Society 6, don’t forget about vendor’s floor at your convention. You might just find the perfect finishing touch and make a friend at the same time.

I hope these tips were helpful. Thank you again to Damaris and Dani (and let’s not forget Juno) for letting me take over their little corner of the internet. Congrats again on a very successful year of blogging!

Thanks Mariko! Love your way to describe how we all can give a more geeky feeling to our home. We have been unconsciously going with the accessorize approach, filling our shelves with not-that-obvious-to the-non-geek-eye objects for our home, it was so much fun to recognize us in your text. Thanks again for your precious help to better represent our geekiness in the blog!

Mariko runs the show at Gamerwife, her place is full of fun and interesting video games reviews focusing on that little indie gems out there, and the lifestyle that comes around them. We love her interview series “Dames who make games” where she highlights the girls working on the video game industry. In short, Mariko is my superhero girl! Go check her blog if video games are your thing, we know there are lots of us out there :)

There still a week and a half to go with the giveaway, just making sure that you got your chance! :)
